Golf Cart Safety Tips for First-Time Renters

Cruising through the charming streets of Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms in a golf cart is the ultimate way to soak up the sun, embrace the sea breeze, and experience the relaxed coastal vibe of South Carolina’s hidden gems.

It’s easy to hop in the cart and go, making it a fun way to get to the beach, grab a bite to eat, or explore the area’s attractions. But before you set off on your adventure, you need to know a few essential safety tips to keep your ride enjoyable and safe.

Understand Local Laws and Regulations

Before starting the cart, familiarize yourself with the local automobile driving and parking laws for golf carts. On Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms, golf cart rentals are often low-speed vehicles (LSVs), so they must follow specific rules.

For instance, street legal golf carts are only allowed on roads with posted speed limits of 35 MPH or less. Driving these carts on major bridges to Mt. Pleasant or other roads with speed limits exceeding 35 MPH is prohibited.

Buckle Up

When driving a golf cart around Sullivan’s Island or Isle of Palms, buckling up is as crucial as in a car. It might surprise some first-time renters to learn that these fun little vehicles can tip over or come to an abrupt stop, especially when navigating sharp turns or uneven terrain.

That’s why seat belts aren’t just an afterthought but a critical safety feature. Making sure everyone in the cart is strapped in can prevent bumps, bruises, or more severe injuries if something unexpected happens on the road.

Obey Speed Limits

Golf carts are a great way to get around Sullivan’s Island, Isle of Palms, and other areas around Charleston, but it’s important to keep an eye on the speed limits, especially when cruising through residential neighborhoods or along beachfront roads.

In these areas, the maximum speed limit is usually 35 MPH. Sticking to that limit isn’t just about keeping yourself safe but also protecting pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers sharing these beautiful streets with you.

Use Turn Signals and Hand Signals

Driving a golf cart isn’t just about mastering the basics of steering and braking; it’s also about ensuring other drivers know your intentions, especially when sharing the road with cars. That’s why renting a street legal golf cart or LSV with built-in turn signals is a good choice.

But if your cart doesn’t have them, don’t worry—you can always use hand signals to show where you’re headed. This simple action can prevent accidents and keep you and your passengers safe.

Stay on Designated Paths

It’s easy to get excited about taking your golf cart rental on an adventure but stick to the designated roadways—golf cart rentals are not permitted on the golf course, the beach, beach access paths, sidewalks, or anywhere off-road. Venturing onto unauthorized paths isn’t just risky—it can lead to fines, environmental damage, or even accidents.

Before you head out, it’s a good idea to check with your rental provider about where you can and can’t drive. That way, you can enjoy your ride without any surprises. For example, if you are renting a regular golf cart, that is not a street legal LSV, you can’t take the carts on Ben Sawyer Blvd or Jasper Blvd on Sullivan’s Island. When cruising around Isle of Palms, avoid Palm Blvd. You also can’t take regular golf carts across the Breach Inlet to travel between Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island. LSV’s are allowed to drive on all roads on IOP and Sullivan’s Island, as well as cross the Breach Inlet bridge. However, no carts may cross either of the main bridges leaving the two islands.

Be Cautious on Beach Access Paths

Beach access paths can be narrow and are usually packed with people, especially when the Charleston tourist season is in full swing. So, always remember that golf carts are not permitted to drive on beach access paths. The one exception to this on Isle of Palms is the 25th Ave beach access path. It is designed in a manner that golf carts can drive into the beach access path and park along the side. The goal is to make your beach day even better and not cause any hassles for others trying to enjoy their time.

Know the Parking Rules

Parking a golf cart can differ slightly from parking a car, so follow local rules to avoid fines or towing. Golf carts are allowed to park in any parking spots designated for cars, but they must follow the same guidelines. For example, if you’re parking on the beach side of Palm Blvd between 21st Ave and 41st Ave, you must be parked with the direction of traffic and at least 4ft off of the pavement. Also look for designated golf cart parking spots, typically marked with signs or smaller spaces near beach access points. On Isle of Palms, you’ll find these spots at the 9th Ave, 25th Ave, 28th Ave, and 31st Ave beach access paths. Sullivan’s Island offers parking at popular beach accesses like Station 22 and Station 30.

Prepare for Weather Conditions

Coastal weather in South Carolina can be unpredictable, so always be prepared. If rain is in the forecast, drive cautiously—wet surfaces make it harder for golf carts to stop or turn due to their lighter frames and smaller tires. If the weather worsens, it’s best to avoid driving, as golf carts are less stable in heavy rain and high winds.

Inspect the Cart Before You Go

Before you rent a golf cart, do a quick inspection. Check that the brakes, lights, turn signals, and seat belts function properly. If you notice any issues, report them to the rental company before you leave. A well-maintained cart ensures a safe ride.
